De-Stress with Your Dog
If dogs could speak, they would probably be barking up a storm about their human pet peeves. Being pack animals, however, dogs have survived over the ages by evolving a different means of communicating with one another. It's not like human language or facial expressions. In the wild, canines developed body language and behaviors that have a calming effect so the animals can cooperatively hunt for prey, raise their young, and resolve conflicts without violence.
Teach Your Dog to Swim
Dock diving -- jumping off a dock into a body of water -- is something you might think a water-loving dog would do at a lake on a hot summer day, but it's actually a certified canine sport. Tournaments have even been broadcast on ESPN, with champion dog divers breaking world records for the canine with the longest leap from a dock into a pool or other body of water.

How to Succeed at Off-Leash Dog Play
Like a doting parent, Anne Hendrickson recalls when her dog, Riley, was just a puppy and she started taking him to an off-leash dog park in Minneapolis. "It was so much fun," Hendrickson says. Riley met a group of playmates. There was Dallas, Zuma and others. "They would meet and run," Hendrickson says, "and wrestle and chase and play."
Hendrickson is convinced of the benefits of off-leash play after seeing how happy it makes Riley and her other two dogs -- and how well behaved the dogs are in the house afterwards. She's started a dog daycare business, Downtown Dogs Minneapolis, where pups play off-leash. She tells clients that off-leash play may help correct many behaviors at home, such as destructive chewing or digging, which could res ...
10 Dog Feeding No-No's
Some dogs experience motion sickness. "We started taking our pug to my mom's on Sunday mornings, and we'd get in the car more or less just after she'd finished eating. Three weeks in a row she threw up," remembers 30-year-old dog owner Casey Johns of Baltimore, Md. "We asked the vet about it, and he told us we needed to wait four hours after she ate to take her for a car ride. My husband and I don't get car sick and can drive after eating with no problem, so it hadn't occurred to us."
Improve Your Dog's To-do List
It's hard enough to keep up with your own to-do list, but do you ever stop to think about your dog's daily schedule? If your best friend doesn't receive plenty of mental and physical stimulation, your dog's own to-do list could be a real yawner. That's because, just like people, your dog can get stuck in a dull rut. It might seem like bliss to have nothing to do all day long, but it soon grows old for both humans and their furry pals.
Rehabilitate Your Reactive Dog
When 27-year-old Jodi Carp of Royal Oak, Mich., moved in with a friend and his German shepherd, she was happy to help out by walking the big boy. Her roommate, however, told her that his dog, Guinness, tended to be overprotective of women walkers. "Just hold his leash tight when men are walking toward you on the street," her new roommate instructed. No problem, she thought.
Solutions for Common Behavior Problems
Our canine companions face a challenge -- many of the things they do instinctively drive us nuts. To live happily in your home, however, your dog must learn to correct those behaviors.
